February is Heart Month—a meaningful reminder that our daily lifestyle choices, including what we eat, how we move, and how we manage stress, play a powerful role in supporting heart health and preventing heart disease.
But what does it truly mean to love your heart from the inside out? Heart health is often discussed in terms of physical habits—exercise, heart-healthy foods, and routine checkups. While these are essential, caring for your heart goes beyond the physical.
It also includes self-compassion, emotional nourishment, stress management, and the way we speak to ourselves each day.
Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States, and stress plays a significant role in the health and resilience of our hearts. Chronic stress—defined as prolonged feelings of pressure and overwhelm—can stem from many sources, such as a toxic work environment, caregiving responsibilities, or ongoing financial strain. Over time, this constant stress can negatively impact heart health, blood pressure, and overall well-being.
So what does it really look like to care for your heart, your self-esteem, and your whole self—from the inside out?
1. Understanding Self-Care
Self-care is not about fixing yourself or striving for perfection. It is about support, awareness, and compassion. Small choices matter, including the way we speak to ourselves. Our words have the power to influence both the heart and the nervous system—either increasing stress or fostering calm and resilience. Choosing self-compassion strengthens the body and mind and supports long-term heart health.
2. A Healthy Relationship With Food
Food provides energy, nourishment, and strength. Rather than labeling foods as “good” or “bad,” focus on building a positive relationship with food and enjoying a heart-healthy eating pattern. Incorporating foods such as fatty fish, leafy greens, berries, whole grains, beans, nuts, seeds, olive oil, dark chocolate, and avocados can support cardiovascular health while still allowing space for enjoyment and balance.
3. Hydration Is Essential to Nourishment
Did you know the body is often more prone to dehydration during the winter months than in the summer? Cooler temperatures can reduce thirst cues, making it easier to forget hydration. Fluids support circulation, energy, and focus—key components of heart health.
On average, adults need about 3 liters (101 ounces) of fluids per day, with approximately 1 liter (34 ounces) coming from water-rich foods such as fruits, vegetables, soups, and oatmeal. Being mindful of hydration is a simple yet powerful act of heart care.
4. Relaxation and Gentle Movement Reduce Stress
Incorporating relaxation and gentle movement into daily life helps reduce stress and supports heart health. Activities such as brisk walking, stretching, dancing, yoga, or chair-based movements encourage circulation and nervous system balance.
While general guidelines recommend 150–300 minutes of moderate activity per week, every movement counts. Start where you are. Even a few minutes of intentional movement can serve as a reminder that your heart is designed to move—and to heal.
Your wellness journey is uniquely yours. Self-care is not a destination—it is an ongoing, evolving process shaped by compassion, intention, and small, meaningful choices.
